Description

The World Ocean is made up of five interconnected oceans, each with its own unique features. In this lesson, you’ll explore one ocean and learn what makes it special, from its size and location to its wildlife and environment. Then, you’ll create a flag using symbols and colors to represent what you’ve learned. This activity helps you think creatively while building a deeper understanding of the ocean and how we can represent complex ideas in a visual way.

Introduction:

Earth has one interconnected ocean and it is called the World Ocean. However, it is divided into five main parts: the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean. Each ocean has different temperatures, depths, currents, and ecosystems.

Even though these oceans are connected, they can feel very different. Some are warm and tropical, while others are cold and icy. Some are the largest and deepest places on Earth, while others are smaller and surrounded by land. Each ocean also supports different plants, animals, and human communities.

Flags are often used to represent places, ideas, or groups of people using symbols, colors, and simple designs. In this lesson, you’ll use symbolism to represent the ocean you choose by making a flag for that ocean!

Materials:

  • Paper (for sketching and final design)
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Ocean Bios (linked in sidebar)

Procedure:

  1. Choose an Ocean: Pick one of the five oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, or Arctic.
  2. Learn About Your Ocean: Using the included Ocean Bios, research or review information about your ocean. Focus on things like size, location, temperature, wildlife, and unique features.
  3. Plan Your Design: On a piece of paper, sketch ideas for your flag. Think about symbols, colors, and shapes that represent your ocean and important features for it.
  4. Create Your Flag: Draw and color your final flag design. Include symbols that help tell the story of your ocean.
